Sing with Orpheus!
We hold auditions at the beginning of the year and by arrangement throughout the year.
As well as concerts mounted by Orpheus, we also sing in engagements and partner events (Vector Wellington Orchestra, NZSO and the International Arts Festival, for example) and provide small groups for corporate or private functions and for television or film work.
We rehearse in Thorndon School Hall on Tuesday nights from 7.30 - 9.30pm. The annual subscription is currently $300.00 inc gst. Fees for full time tertiary students are $150.00 per year. Subscriptions pay for salaries, rehearsal venue hire, and the cost of concerts.
To register for an audition or you if you have any questions contact the Membership Administrator.
Auditions
What we are looking for:
- confident performer who is open to development vocally, musically and technically
- sense of performance
- reliable performer
- high level of musicianship
- clear, free, easily produced voice
What to expect in the audition:
- You will be asked to sing a prepared song, aria, folksong etc - around 2 minutes long. The Music Director will accompany you, so please bring your music.
- Vocal range test
- Ear test (middle notes of triads or lower of two notes played together)
- Sightsinging (2 or more short examples)
Do’s and don’ts of auditioning
- Do take copies of music for the accompanist
- Do arrive in time to settle a bit. At least 20 minutes before the scheduled time of your audition is advisable. This gives time for a little warm-up. The first notes you sing that day should not be in the audition.
- Do go to bed early the night before and avoid alcohol as it tends to dry out the throat and reduce vocal performance. Sleep is the singer’s friend.
- Do be positive. Concentrate on what you can do not what you can’t do.
- Don’t enter the audition room making excuses for yourself.
- DO TRY IT – better to audition and find out what it’s all about than not
